Is it possible to order a vanity plate for a vehicle that I have not yet purchased?'

In short, no. To apply for vanity plates, you must have a current registration for your vehicle.

Q:
Can I download and fill in the forms before heading to the BMV office?

Yes. All the forms are available online. However, you can only download and fill them in. You cannot submit them online.

Q:
Can I order a vanity plate as a gift?

Yes. A Special Interest License Plate can be given as a present. You can order them online or send a completed Special Interest License Plate Application (REG 17) form. Along with that, you have to make an applicable payment to the DMV.

Q:
Is it possible to get a vanity plate made for my commercial truck tractor?

As of state law, you cannot replace a plate on a registration that is not your own according to the Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act (DPPA).

Can I order a vanity plate that starts with the digits?

A1, A2B, A3C5, A4D4U, and F2G3H4 are examples of vanity plates with fewer than 7 characters that mix numbers and letters as long as the first character is a letter. Vanity plates can't start with a 0 (zero) or the letter oeO, and then just numerals.

Is it possible to order a disability (handicap) plate through the internet?

Use the Disabled Person Parking Placard Form Application to apply online. Apply by mail or in person at the following address: Fill out an Application for Disabled Person Placards or Plates and sign it (REG 195).

How can I check if my plate was approved?

Generally, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles sends you a notification email that includes the information of plate approval.

Q:
How are fees generated for the driver’s license, renewal, etc?

Generally, the fees vary based on the vehicle type, license plate type, and the renewal period. However, some of them are available on the BMV fee chart.

Is Maine a two-plate state?

Yes. Maine requires to attach both front and back plates while operating the vehicle. However, this law doesn’t apply to motorcycles and trailers.

Does Maine have an online license plate lookup service?'

No. Maine doesn’t have an online license plate lookup service. However, you can pay a visit to the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office and request the vehicle records, lettering availability, etc.

How much should I pay for my Maine license plate?'

The registration price in Maine is $35.00 for passenger automobiles weighing up to 6000 lbs.

How many types of Maine License Plates are available?'

For now, Maine offers nine types of specialty plates available.

Q:
How will I obtain my license plates, stickers, and registration?'

In Maine, you can receive a replacement registration, license plate, or a license plate sticker at any of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' thirteen branch offices. Maine has also established mobile units throughout the state that may give replacement paperwork, plates, and stickers.

Is it possible to have my plates shipped to a specific address?'

Yes, when completing the online Vanity Plate Order application, you can choose an alternate postal address.

Q:
My trailer has a two-year registration. For this registration, can I apply for a trailer vanity plate online?'

Yes. For both registration periods ($50.00), you will be charged the $25.00 yearly cost.

Q:
What more special characters can I put on my vanity plate than letters and numbers?'

You can get a dash (-) and an ampersand in addition to a blank space between characters (&).

Q:
Is it possible for me to include an ampersand in my seven-character vanity plate sequence?'

The ampersand is only allowed in sequences of 2 to 6 characters due to the size of the character on the plate.

Q:
Will the image on my chickadee plate be covered by a seven-character vanity plate?'

Plates with seven characters, especially if the sequence includes a space or a dash, will cover the chickadee design.

Q:
What types of plates are considered specialty ones, and do I need to make additional payments for them every year?'

Specialty plates that have seven characters and cover the chickadee design are considered specialty ones. The fees vary based on the type of the plate and exemption regulations.

Q:
Is it possible to apply for a Firefighter vanity plate online?'

It depends. If you want to replace already existing firefighter vanity plates you can re-apply. However, you cannot submit an initial application.

Q:
Does the Bureau of Motor Vehicles accept online payments?'

For now, the BMV doesn’t accept online payments. You can only complete the payment via Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Q:
Can I submit an application for renewal online and meanwhile make a request for vanity plates?'

No. You cannot submit your renewal application along with the vanity plate request as the renewed registration arrives within 3 to 5 days. Whenever you have got the renewed documents you can fill in and submit the application for your vanity plates.

Q:
Are there any time limits for license plate applications?'

No. You can order your license plates anytime you want. However, if you have registration make sure it’s the expiration date is not near.

Q:
Can I obtain the same vanity in another class code?'

No. You cannot obtain the same vanity plate in another class code as the state has prohibited the procedure. So, for now, there are no class code duplications available.

Q:
If I have got another class registration and vanity plate, can I have my current ones renewed?'

Surely. If your registration wasn’t expired for more than a year, you are allowed to renew your existing vanity plates.
